Ethical Pantry is an independent reference for choosing ethical products in Japan.
What this site does
Plant-based, allergen-free, organic, fair trade, plastic-free. These terms spread quickly, and are often used without a shared understanding of what they mean or what stands behind them.
Ethical Pantry sets out, for each term, what it means, which regulations or certifications sit behind it, and how you can verify a claim yourself. It is written around Japanese regulation and retail, so it also covers the places where information from elsewhere does not transfer.
What this site does not do
- Sell anything — this is not a shop
- Rank or score individual products
- Publish sponsored or advertorial content
- Give medical or nutritional advice
Editorial policy
- Company and brand profiles are third-party descriptions from public sources only
- We do not publish figures or claims we cannot verify
- Where we describe regulation, we note that it changes and point to the primary source
- We do not treat the presence or absence of certification as a verdict
Languages
Japanese is the primary language; an English version sits under /en/. The content corresponds, but because it is largely about Japanese regulation, the English version also assumes a Japanese context.
