Choosing a food subscription

What to check before signing up to a plant-based or organic subscription box.

Find out what actually arrives

Subscriptions come in two shapes: fixed, where the same items arrive each time, and curated, where the contents change. Curated boxes introduce you to new products, and can also contain things you dislike or cannot eat.

  • Whether you can exclude allergens
  • Whether contents are disclosed in advance
  • The deadline for skipping or changing an order
  • Whether you choose items, or it is entirely curated

The contract

The usual problem with subscriptions is the introductory discount tied to a minimum number of deliveries. Where the first box is cheap on condition that you continue, cancelling early can trigger a charge.

  • Whether a minimum term applies
  • How to cancel — online, or does it require a phone call?
  • The cancellation deadline before the next dispatch
  • Whether you can skip a delivery, and how often
  • Whether shipping is included in the price

Thinking about cost

Subscriptions are usually priced below buying the same items individually, but only if you get through them. From a food-waste perspective too, the delivery interval should match how fast you actually consume. Most services let you choose.

Packaging

Even with an ethically positioned service, subscription packaging accumulates. Padding material, coolant packs and whether the outer box can be reused all matter more the longer you subscribe.
