Vegan cafes and in-store pickup

Ordering online and collecting in a shop — a model Japanese ethical retail has repeatedly tried.

How it works

You order from an online store and collect the goods at a partner cafe or shop. Several Japanese ethical and vegan retailers have experimented with this.

The advantages are clear: less shipping packaging, no failed redeliveries, and a reason to look around the shop when you collect. For chilled and frozen items, it can also preserve quality better than delivery.

What to check

  • How long they will hold the order
  • Whether chilled and frozen goods can be handled
  • Opening hours and closing days
  • Whether ID is needed at collection
  • What happens if you do not collect

Why it stays small

The logic is sound, but it puts storage space and staff time onto the shop. Below a certain volume it does not pay, so these schemes usually cover a limited number of locations — which is why independent cafes tend to be the partners.

Comparable options

  • Delivery lockers and convenience store pickup — packaging unchanged, but no redelivery
  • Neighbourhood group buying — one delivery, split locally
  • Buying in a physical shop — still the lowest packaging option
