No added MSG

Products made without added umami seasonings. Like “additive-free” generally, what it covers varies by product.

What the claim covers

“No chemical seasoning” generally means no added monosodium glutamate or similar umami seasonings. On Japanese labels these appear as “seasoning (amino acids, etc.)”.

The claim does not mean additive-free in general. Plenty of products carry it while using yeast extract or hydrolysed protein to supply umami. Those are classified as foods rather than additives, so they do not appear in the additive list, but the purpose is similar. This is not an argument that one is better — only that it is worth reading what the claim actually promises.

What to check

  • Whether “seasoning (amino acids, etc.)” appears
  • Yeast extract and hydrolysed protein
  • Whether flavour is built from actual stock — kombu, dried shiitake, niboshi
  • If the pack says “additive-free”, what specifically it says is absent
