Small producers

Goods from small-batch makers. Lower volume often means more visible provenance.

What small scale does and does not mean

Small scale does not by itself guarantee quality or ethics. But limited volume has practical consequences: origin is easier to pin down, process is easier to describe, and the maker is often communicating directly. The amount of checkable information tends to be higher.

The cost of certification, on the other hand, weighs more heavily. Plenty of small producers hold neither Organic JAS nor fair trade certification, and marking them down for that absence is not fair. The question becomes what is disclosed in its place.

What to check

  • Whether the producer's name and location are stated
  • Where the raw materials come from
  • A specific account of how it is made
  • If uncertified, whether the reason is addressed
